busiest airport in Indiana. The rail service is provided by Amtrak, the national

South Bend is the fourth largest city in Indiana and county seat of St.
Joseph County. It is the economic and cultural hub of the Michiana region. South
Bend was originally settled in the early 19th century by fur traders. Then it
was established as a city in 1865. South Bend is the focal point for Michiana
because of having the second busiest airport in Indiana, interurban rail service
to downtown Chicago and several large businesses including AM General, Bosch
Crowe Chizek and Bosch. South Bend has two sister cities, Czestochowa located in
Poland and Arzberg located in Germany.
Demographic Information
South Bend is a city situated on the St. Joseph river and a twin city of
Mishawaka in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. It is located at
41°40′21″N, 86°15′19″W (41.672597, -86.255157) at 692 feet above the sea level.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.1
square miles (101.3 km²). The city is situated about 5 miles (8 km) from the
Michigan border, and approximately 5 miles (8 km) from Illinois and Ohio. As of
the census of 2000, there were 107,789 people, 42,908 households, and 25,959
families residing in the city. The population density was 2,786.4 people per
square mile (1,075.9/km²).
